The original ancestor of the Donnelly’s was Donnail O Neill a descendant of Eoghan son of Niall of the nine hostages, who supposedly kidnapped St. Patrick to Ireland. The connection between the Donnellys and the O’Neills can be seen in their very similar coat of arms, both depicting two lions holding a hand over a body of water. The Donnelly’s are historically famous as soldiers but also have a history as hereditary bards.
